On 1 April 2021, the Victorian Fisheries Authority introduced a slot limit of 28-38cm for black bream caught in the Gippsland Lakes and its tributaries.
It’s expected that the new slot limit will ensure more breeding black bream will remain in the system which will have a great impact on the black bream population in the Lakes.
The new slot limit is part of the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) Gippsland Lakes Recreational Fishery Plan which aims to recover the Lakes to their former glory. Introducing a slot limit was endorsed by recreational fishers during the VFA’s consultation process for the plan which received almost 4,400 submissions.
